What follows is my recollection of the experience, of things that I have been told and ways I have tried to treat the disease. I consider myself one of the many veterinarians who have been humbled by laminitis while trying to treat its painful effects and intense suffering. So this is my story of treating laminitis. In 1967, as a third year veterinary student, my first case in the University of Missouri Equine Clinic was a pony that belonged to a good friend. The pony had laminitis and was euthanized because of severe rotation of the distal phalanx.

Dr Brown’s testimonial convinced me that I needed to find out more about Harry’s methods. By this time I had started the Animal Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization, to raise money to fund laminitis research. On my Board of Directors was a person who knew Harry well and had taken several horses with laminitis to him. He offered to introduce me, but I was skeptical that Harry would tell me anything. Laminitis Treatment: A Personal Memoir I just happened to have at that time a large, part-draft mare that had severe unilateral laminitis in a rear foot.
