15 16 Part One. Engaging with Tradition Since time immemorial, a man had always ruled over the Ndau kingdom. A woman’s place was at the cooking fire, Tamara had heard her grandmother say so many times. “Not me,” she had said, shaking her head violently. “My place is on the throne. I’m a princess. ” She hissed softly and the dog that lay beside her suddenly stood as if agreeing with her. She patted it slightly and then, as the clouds continued to gather, she said, “Shumba, let’s go,” and she ran all the way to her hut, the dog on her trail.

Our men say that they do not need this thing to cover their male body. . ] When a Bantu gives the disease to one of our women, he flees the village. It is a shame. The sick woman is abandoned to her sad fate. We do not go to the hospital because we do not have money to pay for the drugs; we treat ourselves with the plants, wood, and certain animal parts. Moreover, during the civil war, even the Bantus came here to ask us to cure them with our plants and medicine. They abandoned their villages to live in the forest because of the war.

Thankfully, that is where writing comes in. Writing is resistance, an opportunity to voice my non-compliance. Here I can make up for all those moments where I wish I had said something. Here I can anchor those past (and future) experiences, deconstruct them, learn from them, and perhaps most importantly, share them.
